Together, Optelec and Spark have developed the ClearReader+, a completely new aid for, among others the blind or visually impaired. This device has a unique function: the automatic conversion of printed text into speech.
New model
The ClearReader+ text-to-speech device is a new model, but thanks to the attractive design and its logical functioning it has been immediately accepted by the existing users group. The device has a simple folding camera arm which the user can place, for example, a newspaper, a book or a TV-guide under. After pressing the scan button, the camera takes a photograph of the text and, a few seconds later, reads the text out automatically.
The design and colour of the controls make them easy to distinguish and use for the visually impaired or the blind. The device is battery-operated and, thanks to the handle, is portable. The Li-ion battery is quick to charge and long-lasting (five hours of continuous use).
Cross border
The Optelec ClearReader+ is an important social tool for the blind and visually impaired, as well as for people with literacy problems or dyslexia. Its primary function - to automatically convert text into speech - is completely new. This product works across borders by offering four languages as standard: Dutch, English, French and German. The reading speeds can also be customised.
The ClearReader+ is the latest product to come from the highly successful cooperation between Optelec and Spark. Previous projects to develop assistance devices for the blind or visually impaired included a digital magnifying glass, a braille controllerl and an electronic reading magnifier.
Spark and Optelec received a GIO Award 2010 for the ClearReader+.
