The key challenges were: to reduce the cost price, make the unit more compact yet compatible with existing systems, and to minimise energy consumption. All without adversely affecting the taste quality. During intensive brainstorming sessions we came up with ideas for new mechanisms, focusing on the piston system in particular. We decided to replace the piston with a membrane: a new, worldwide-patented principle that meets all the specified aims.
This solution was thoroughly tested in a trial rig. The end product had all the functions fully integrated and was made solely from injection moulded plastic.
