Creating an electric fireplace

Electronics for Kalfire's emission-free fireplace

The Kalfire eOne is a complex and layered product. Behind the exterior is a system of electronics, software and lcd displays, all working together to create a realistic fire experience. 

Every decision, from the housing to the electronics was part of an integrated puzzle. Together with Kalfire, we turned the ambition of creating emission-free fire into a product ready for large-scale production and certification.

Reimagining fire

Creating a fireplace without actually burning fuel meant letting go of everything we associate with fire. Instead, we focused on recreating the experience. 


To achieve this, we developed custom electronics hardware and firmware that synchronize video, light, sound, heat and remote control into one system. We created early prototypes to validate the concept and delivered a manufacturable product.

Using video

To create a convincing flame effect, we combined lcd displays with mirrors precisely projecting video onto real logs. 


Spark developed the complete system necessary for projecting flames. Including video creation, editing and the video processing software and hardware for smooth projection. One of the main challenges was balancing between smoothly running flame animations and the limited bitrates of the cost-effective hardware. 


The final solution is a custom infrastructure built around Pi Compute Modules, together with patented, customized lcd display technology. 

Validation & safety

With so much technology inside a compact enclosure, thermal management became a critical part of the design. 

We validated and optimized the system’s thermal behavior to ensure a long product lifetime. On top of that we guided the full process of UL certification readiness.
