Utrecht adopts GFE Cocoon

From Rotterdam to Utrecht: tailored design based on a proven concept

Following the successful design of the GFE cocoon for the municipality of Rotterdam, Spark has developed a customized version together with the municipality of Utrecht.

Based on the existing Rotterdam design, we jointly created a variant that aligns with the look and feel of Utrecht's existing waste bins, while also implementing minor design optimizations.

Low disposal height

Comfortable and ergonomic use

Robust and easily repairable construction

Learning from real-world practice

Thanks to insights gained from practical use in Rotterdam, we were able to further improve the design. For example, disposal convenience was enhanced by adding a stay mechanism that keeps the lid open for a few seconds when in use. This makes it more accessible, especially for elderly or less mobile users. The internal frame has also been simplified, and the housing components are now even easier to replace, which simplifies maintenance and reduces costs.

Designing together = stronger together

The design was created in close collaboration with Utrecht. Involving multiple departments led to a broadly supported solution that is practical and functional for all users. We built a working prototype early in the process, which allowed all stakeholders to validate and refine the design details before the tender phase.

A design as the basis for control and equality

Spark documented the design in detail in a clear and visual document, including a complete 3D model. This documentation not only outlines what the design includes, but also explains why. This simplifies the tendering process and avoids unnecessary questions. With the final design in hand, Utrecht was able to begin the tendering process with full clarity about the desired solution.

Collaboration between municipalities pays off

We are proud that 'our' GFE housing will now also be used in Utrecht. This is partly thanks to the municipality of Rotterdam, which actively shares the design with other municipalities. As a result, investments in time, knowledge, and resources are used efficiently. A win-win for both municipalities and citizens.

We challenge all Dutch municipalities: take control. Design first, then tender!

“Working together with Spark was a pleasure. Pro-active thinking and a structured process gave the project a natural flow. This is not something you see often.”
