Building an innovation culture

Lasting impact through hands-on innovation sessions

Innovation does not depend on a single ‘maverick’ in your organization. The best ideas can emerge from everybody, at any level and from different departments. But you need to unlock innovation competences across the company to get real innovation power. Ensuring everybody understands their impact and feels empowered to contribute to the experiences of colleagues and clients. But how do we stimulate this positive innovation power within organizations?

Together with Camillo Spratt, Innovator and Disruption Officer, Spark facilitates Innovation programs for different organizations. For HTM (a large public transport company) Spark facilitated five different seasons of our innovation program with the Innovation Manager from HTM, Peter Smit. The result: cross-departmental collaboration, new ideas from across the organization, empowered and competent professionals throughout the whole organization and a lasting cultural shift towards collaboration, professionalism and client centered thinking.

Making lasting impact

Developing a more engaged mindset

Hands-on innovation

The innovation sessions brought together a diverse group of HTM employees,  tram- and bus drivers, technicians, IT-specialists and  office staff from multiple departments. During the innovation program, which consisted of different interactive sessions, the ‘new innovators’ learned simple techniques and tools and got different canvasses to research client-needs and built solutions in a hands-on way.

The design thinking methodology and Spark’s world class innovation experience guided the energetic process: gathering insights, generating ideas, building different prototypes and test and defend them in the organization. Our approach led to small but important product improvements that were easy to implement, and to larger initiatives such as the mobile bus shelter, which Spark helped develop.

Cross-pollination across departments

One of HTM’s key challenges was fostering a more innovative culture throughout the organization. The goal was to raise awareness of the power of innovation and give tangible direction to strategic themes such as passenger experience and sustainability.

By bringing together employees from different departments, the sessions created true cross-pollination. Participants stepped outside their usual roles, spoke to a lot of different people, and gained new perspectives and insights. Some of the participants in the program even used the program to take new steps in their careers. For example a tram driver transitioned to the technical department after participating in the program. There are many examples of how innovation unlocks hidden talent in an organization.

Innovation as an incubator

Throughout the process, Spark helped facilitating creative sessions, guided brainstorming, and supported teams in building accessible, low-threshold prototypes and strong visualizations. By positioning innovation as an internal incubator, organizations can empower their employees to take ownership of ideas and develop a more engaged mindset.

Spark helps organizations to embed the innovation mindset structurally, so it becomes part of everyday thinking and doing and not just a one-time initiative.
