From prototype to market introduction

Disinfecting toilet water in recreational boating

Spark has helped Yes!Delft startup Fluss develop a revolutionary system for disinfecting toilet water in recreational boating. The compact and affordable Flussguard system is a direct solution to the legislation that prohibits discharging toilet water into surface water.

Thanks to the intensive collaboration between Fluss and Spark, a product has been created that is not only technically innovative but also perfectly matches the needs of watersport enthusiasts and boat owners.

Revolutionary system

Strong brand experience and design

Easy to install

From technology to product

Fluss founders Ignus Trollman and Lucas Veel had developed a method to kill bacteria in black water, but the idea still needed to be further developed into a concrete, market-ready product. Spark guided Fluss through the entire product development process: from a lab model and test setups to an actual prototype. Our expertise in research, testing, brand experience, design, user interaction, electronics development, and materialization for initial production quantities was used to turn the technology into a user-friendly and robust product.

User-centered development

Together, we researched who the users are, what technical requirements the product must meet, and how the product idea could be optimized for the wide variety of boats. Additionally, we ensured that the product would be simple and hassle-free to use.

To make the right decisions, we conducted research with boat installers and installed test models on real boats. This provided valuable insights into usability, ease of installation, and maintenance. Based on user scenarios and feedback from real-world use, we mapped potential risks and further refined the technology.

From prototype to market introduction

We developed a pilot model and tested it on various boats to assess the technology in practice over an extended period. The focus was on safety, ease of installation, and hassle-free operation of the product. We also considered the brand experience and design: what are the core values of the product, and how can we translate that into an attractive and practical design?

After an iterative design process, the project is now in its final phase: realizing a prototype and validation for release to mass production and market introduction.

The result of this design process is a compact, reliable, and easy-to-install solution that is applicable to various types of boats. A wonderful collaboration where technology and design come together!
