Speeding up the design process

Combining engineering and design expertise

Together with Holmatro, Spark developed the AutoSelect Pump: a battery-powered pump that enables existing hydraulic rescue tools to run on an electric system.

The product adds a new capability to Holmatro’s portfolio, allowing customers to adopt new technology while continuing to use the tools they already own.

Holmatro defined a clear brief for the AutoSelect Pump. The key components for functional performance were already determined, while the design challenge was to create a product that feels unmistakably Holmatro, meets user needs and can be brought to market quickly with smart investments in tooling.

Working as one team

A successful collaboration does not always require a full A-to-Z development process. The best approach depends on the challenge.

For the AutoSelect Pump, an experienced Holmatro engineer worked closely with a Spark designer throughout the process. By combining technical expertise with design thinking, ideas around product layout, usability and appearance were continuously refined.

From sketch to decision

The first design phase explored a wide range of possibilities through sketches. Together with a focused Holmatro team, these concepts were quickly evaluated on feasibility, usability and brand fit.

The strongest direction was developed further into a detailed 3D design, bringing the product vision closer to reality.

Designing the details

A strong product appearance is built through the details. The thickness of a tube, the position of a handle, the transition between surfaces, colours and logo placement all influence how a product is experienced.

Based on the final 3D design and the decisions made throughout the process, Holmatro was able to move quickly towards production and successfully introduce the new AutoSelect RescuePump at Interschutz.
